An introduction to survival analysis

Course Tutor: Dr Jim Lewsey: Dr Jim Lewsey is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics and works in the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow. Jim was awarded Chartered Statistician status from the Royal Statistical Society in 2010. He has many years of experience of teaching medical statistics to both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate MPH students, and has a research interest in survival analysis methodology.

Summary of workshop: This course will provide you with the basic knowledge of when and how to use survival analysis in your research. The theory and concepts underpinning survival analysis will be explained with practical worked examples allowing you to put these to use in the provided datasets.

Theoretical sections will be illustrated from the literature and supported by practical worked examples. Topics covered will include:

• Introduction to survival analysis

• Survival times and censoring

• Kaplan-Meier plot and log-rank test

• The Cox proportional hazards model

• Model building strategies

• Other issues (selected by participants which may include one from interaction of predictors, parametric models, SA using Stata and R)

Workshop content: The course will consist of 6 sessions comprising 1hr lectures followed by relevant computer practicals.

Target Audience: Epidemiologists, biostatisticians and other researchers with basic statistical skills wanting to develop a better knowledge of survival analysis. The course will be taught referencing survival analysis using SPSS but we plan to provide worked examples in Stata as well. No previous knowledge of survival analysis will be required. All delegates will be required to use their own laptop with a version of SPSS installed – we may be able to loan some delegates a laptop if this is a problem, please contact the organisers. The course will be limited to 15 participants.

Course Materials: Participants will receive written course notes and all notes, tutorials and worked examples on a Pen Drive.
